Deutsch connector structure combination

Deutsch connectors consist of male (pin) and female (socket) terminals—contacts in Deutsch-speak—and a housing with a male half (receptacle) and female half (plug). The connector you’ll most often encounter is the DT Series. There are two types of DT contacts—stamped/formed (open barrel) and solid (closed(barrel). The contacts are interchangeable within the connector.

Assembling the Deutsch connector012

The key to assembling a Deutsch connector is to remember that the male contacts fit into the receptacle portion of the connector and the female contacts fit into the plug portion. To install the male contacts, push the wire through the orange silicone seal and push into the back of the case until you hear (or feel) a click. If you pull this wire, it should be tight. Use needle nose pliers to insert the green wedge lock under the contacts, with the flat part facing down. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to push the wedge lock into place; it forces the contacts up into a set of grooves on the top of the case.
The female contacts are installed in the connector like the male contacts. The difference is the wedge lock – you slide the orange lock into the groove and snap it into place by hand.
Dismantling the Deutsch Connector

Removing the male connector of a Deutsch DT connector is easy if you have the right tool. We offer tools for extractors with different gauge wires. Choose the extractor for your wire and insert it from the back (wire side) of the socket. Push the extractor forward and you will feel the wedge lock release. The wires can then be removed.

To remove the female connector, insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the side of the assembly and twist the screwdriver so that the wedge lock pops out. There are two tabs inside the case. Press them down with a screwdriver and pull on the back of the wire/contact assembly to release it.

Deutsch connectors are not difficult to use; provide a safe, weatherproof electrical connection; and do not require expensive tools to assemble. Think of them as another tool in your electrical systems toolbox.
